Aspen’s Story – From Craigslist to Canine Citizen

Aspen, is another Craigslist rescue. Listed for free by two men in a Palmdale apartment, Aspen was unwanted due to a blemish in one of his eyes. When @MadLoveAnimalRescue stepped in, Aspen arrived soaked in urine and dangerously underweight, his ribs visibly poking through.

Despite his rough start, Aspen had a spark—a playful, loyal pup with lots of energy and potential. But he needed help. Melvin, our trusted trainer, recommended a 10–12-week basic obedience program, focused equally on dog and human training. If adopted mid-program, Aspen’s new family would continue his journey. If not, he’d stay with Nikki at Mad Love until fully trained.

August 22, 2023: Aspen began his training! Melvin noticed Aspen’s strong pack drive, a great foundation for learning. With leash guidance, he quickly adapted to following a leader—now it’s up to Nikki to continue that role at home.

August 29, 2023: Just one week later, Aspen was already showing incredible progress. Nikki was all in—doing just as much learning and leading as Aspen himself. Training continued with a focus on the “follow” state and leash manners.

November 11, 2023: After 10 weeks, Aspen had learned the fundamentals to become a well-rounded dog, thanks to Melvin’s structure and Nikki’s unwavering love.

November 25, 2023: Nikki brought it all together in their final sessions—proof that rescue success is a true team effort.

November 29, 2023: The big moment—Aspen took his Canine Good Citizen Test with Isaac, our VP and trainer!
